Prevalence and Factors Associated with the Severity of Anaemia among Patients on Chronic Haemodialysis in Lagos, Nigeria

Background: Anaemia is a global public health problem with high mortality and morbidity. It also common consequence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). There paucity data on the actual burden anaemia among patients haemodialysis (CHD) in Lagos, Nigeria. Objectives: To determine prevalence factors associated severity Nigerian undergoing haemodialysis. Methods: This was retrospective analysis adult end-stage renal (ESRD) maintenance at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos. The extracted from clinical case files included bio-demographic parameters, including treatment modalities. Results: A total 92 comprising 69 (75%) males 23 (25.0%) females overall mean age 48.2±14.0 years were included. Hypertension commonest aetiology CKD average duration 16.6 months. access route for central line while 96.7% 81.5% received erythropoietin intravenous iron sucrose respectively. Seventy-three (79.3%) have had intra-dialysis blood transfusions past. Mild, moderate, severe recorded 17%, 67%, 16% use erythropoietin, sucrose, increased frequency correlated anaemia. Conclusion: highly prevalent Increased transfusions, inadequate utilization administration are predictors severity.
